How To Access Time Machine on macOS Big Sur [Tutorial]

Make sure your backup disk is plugged in, turned on, and securely connected to your Mac. If your backup disk is on a network, make sure both the disk and your Mac are connected to the network. If the network is experiencing problems, your backup disk may not be available.

If you upgraded to macOS Big Sur on a Mac that uses a Time Capsule or other network storage device as the backup destination, your existing backups are also upgraded and can be used only on macOS Big Sur. New backups that are created can be used only on macOS Big Sur.

This tutorial will apply for MacBook Pro, Air, Mini’s running the macOS operating system. This tutorial was performed on a macOS Big Sur system.

  2. This was ridiculous mate 😂 I was looking more on how to transition to Big Sur, APFS and a previous Time Capsule backup, let me know if you have some input. You have a very smoothing voice 👍😍 Cheers!

  3. Why in Big Sur does Time Machine restore the OS and then use Migration Assistant? It used to restore a clone of the Time Machine backup.

  4. Question: how do you delete a file or all backup versions of that file in time machine running Big Sur? No one seems to know that once you enter time machine, the delete function is no longer available…

  5. How to do it on a external disk without reformating the disk ?

  6. My last Time machine backup to my 2 tb Time Capsule was made on my old iMac. With my new Big Sur Mac Mini, I get an error saying there is not enough room to complete backup. Apparently it is not overwriting the old backup. I tried unmounting and erasing wth disc utility which all failed. Is my Time Capsule useless now.? Also I can’t use an external T 5 . I tried selecting it for backup, but the Time Machine is stuck in the “ can’t complete backup’ mode. I can’t select out of it.
